Precedent Studies: issued 092006::due 100206

This week there are two interconnected and simultaneous goals_

CREATURES_ keep building up complexity of your computational systems by gradually adding information to the system _ layering and interconnecting different microbehaviors… Use your sessions with tutors for that goal.

HOSTS _ the examples bellow will introduce you to some ideas about artificial ecologies, composite landscapes (nature/technology/economy/culture) and various interconnected agents. Although your final proposal is aimed towards much more fantastical outcome _ you should learn from the precedent cases to help you start bringing out specifics within your systems and recognizing particular entry points into ecology of your site.
This phase is also aimed towards the selection of the site (your wetline host condition) which everyone should have an idea about till Monday Oct 2_ not only choosing a specific location (such as Manhattan or Greenland’s melting icescape) but also zooming into particular features of the location _ those you should analyze diagrammatically and call out from the totality of your site _

Your creatures in the making and your entering the specific layers of the host condition should start converging. Use the provided examples to help focus your search for specificity and simultaneously richness of your proposals.

In your systems the words are starting to crystallize such as adherence, balance, camouflage, branching/forking… those words need to be informed further with for instance what kind of forking you are looking at _ unidirectional, bi, multi etc as an example_ building up specificity into your system is crucial_ many references you got so far should help you build that specificity.

Examples:
_El Ejido, Spain _ from Keller Easterlig’s book ‘Enduring Innocence’ (provided)
_Self-Organizing black market in Odessa Ukraine (provided)
_open sea traveling fish farms:www.wired.com/wired/archive/12.05/fish.html
_Lindy Roy’s African Delta project (provided)
_Borges, stories from Labyrinths, Garden of Forking Paths (provided)

Additional examples you can look at:
_Dubai’ artificial islands
_The High Line project by Diller+Scofidio ++ James Corner
_Wave Garden by Yusuke Obuchi: http://pruned.blogspot.com/2005/06/wave-garden-by-yusuke-obuchi.html
_Fresh Kills project by Field Operations

Additional Readings:
_AD Programming Cultures, M. Silver, Ed. _ texts:
1. When Code Matters by Ingeborg Rocker (will give you basic intro to computation)
2. All-Over, Over-All by Pia Ednie-Brown (emergent composure, design process relative to computation and material practice analyzed on the example of biothing)
